Academy Breakin’ Convention

Straight outta London, Academy Breakin’ Convention (ABC) is the UK’s first FREE full-time Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performance and Production Arts specific to Hip Hop Theatre for 16 – 19 year olds. The course fills a gap in professional pathways for emerging artists and entrepreneurs who want to pursue work within the creative industries focused on hip hop culture.

On the course students will engage in:

  • 12 units of UAL’s Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performance and Production Arts
  • ABC‘s hip hop elements: Hip Hop Social Dance / Popping / Breaking / Emcee / DJing / Graffiti / Music Production
  • Wellbeing and self-development sessions
  • Industry and careers progression sessions
  • The creation and devising of theatrical work

The course is run in conjunction with Big Creative Training and provides young people of all backgrounds the opportunity to receive high quality training, studying the technical elements to prepare them for further studies, performance work and wider opportunities in the creative industry. Our aim is to nurture talent, instil growth mindsets and equip all learners with tools to build sustainable livelihoods in creative careers. We will encourage a variety of career progression routes from producing, directing, choreographing, script writing, marketing as well as performance-based practice; championing cross-disciplinary and collaboration.

Academy Breakin’ Convention is based at Sadler’s Wells East, a new state of the art venue located in East London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The new space will be part of East Bank, alongside the BBC, UAL’s London College of Fashion, UCL and the V&A. The site will form a new cultural hub for young creatives, presenting opportunities for collaboration and innovation between organisations and communities.

Hip hop is a part of our creative future and ABC will nurture artists to become cultural contributors and future leaders.
